The TipTop Audio Z-DSP is equipped with two unique audio channels labelled as Left/1, and Right/2. The separate names are in regards to Left and Right being applicable for stereo effects, and 1 and 2 for more diverse uses such as Carrier and Signal in a ring modulator. The Z-DSP is completely stereo, with no summers. Each channel is built using a distinct audio input, feedback input, processing block, audio output, and feedback output.
The Z-DSP uses an open-loop-feedback architecture giving you the freedom to insert other processing devices into the feedback loop. The Feedback Input contains a VCA that allows control of the gain of the feedback loop. You can control the gain from any voltage source, and the VCA is very responsive to control input. It can be swept up into the audio range for interesting feedback effects. The feedback loop is hardwired internally, so with nothing plugged into the Feedback Input, it's fed from the 100 wet Feedback Output. Turning the Feedback input knob clockwise introduces more signal back into the input of the channel, whilst inserting a plug into the Feedback Input will break the loop. Some of the algorithms process feedback internally in the digital domain. The texture of digital feedback is very different to analog, and offers a slightly different character overall. Combining both digital and analog feedback provides you with an extensive sound palette.
The front panel of the TipTop Audio Z-DSP is laid out in an intelligent and easy to follow manner thanks to the intuitive graphics and typography which provide you with the information to understand the signal flow and indicate the functions of the controls and I/Os. From top-to-bottom/left-to-right, the panel contains the following:
Built into the TipTop Audio Z-DSP is a simple monophonic preamp for guitars. This can be quickly and easily enabled with 2 jumpers on the back of the module. The first jumper gives you the choice between synth (line) level and guitar level. Placing the jumper between 2 and 3 achieves synth level, and between 1 and 2 enables guitar level. The second jumper is used for enabling the preamp for both inputs, or just the left input. Your guitar should be connected to the left channel input only, with the second jumper controlling the routing to the right input.
The Z-DSP uses cartridges which can contain up to 8 programs, with each program being a set of mathematical algorithms that are used to manipulate data in the digital domain. The ADC brings an analog signal into the digital domain by capturing it repeatedly, creating a sample. Various operations can be applied to a sample:
These are just a small amount of the many functions that can be applied to a sample. Combining the operations can result in the creation of effects, filters, compressors, limiters, and a whole list of other audio processes. The Z-DSP allows you to load programs from a cartridge manually with the yellow button on the module, or by feeding it a pulse or voltage for automated control. A built-in sequential switch allows you to switch the programs either forward or in reverse. Program switching brings a whole load of fun to using the Z-DSP, and can result in some truly extraordinary sonic characteristics.
