AJH Minimod Ring SM, Silver (14HP) Overview
The AJH Minimod Ring SM, Silver is a powerful sound design module that features a ring modulator, 2 independent sub-oscillators, and a 5 channel mixer with distortion capability. Ideal for creating thick, bass sounds, the Minimod Ring SM features 2 sub generators with quick tracking and specially shaped waveforms. The ring modulator section features 3 dedicated inputs and mix levels, which are ideal for creating the classic bell and mallet sounds. The mixer section features a 5th input which is considerably 'hotter'. Once pushed past a certain threshold the input will overdrive naturally allowing you to add distortion. Conveniently, all the outputs of the ring modulator and sub bass generators are normalised to the internal mixer by default allowing you to mix without needing to patch cables in. The Minimod Ring SM is the ideal for both studio and live performance applications.

The Minimod Ring SM utilises a circuit that is based on the discrete transistor AC coupled Gilbert Cell design which dates back to the early 1960’s. The ring modulator features an additional input (Z) that has been added to the usual carrier and modulator inputs. The extra input produces a more resonant sound that the other inputs allowing you to you to create a wide range of percussive mallet and bell type sounds. With the addition of the internal mixer, you can simultaneously mix these inputs together.
Sub Bass Generators
The Minimod Ring SM is capable of creating huge, thick bass sounds, and features 2 independent sub bass generators that can be mixed together using the mixer. The first sub bass generator produces a shaped sinewave that is one octave below the waveform applied to the X IN input. It is routed through mixer channel 4 by default. The 2nd sub bass generator produces a sinewave that is two octaves below the waveform applied to the X IN input. This is routed to channel 5 by default. The sub bass waveforms vary from a trapezoid wave with rounded edged, to sine like waveforms. They have lower harmonic content that regular subs and tend to be less muddy in a mix. They are specifically designed to sit better in a mix and this results in them appearing to have more drive and punch, as they are clean and tight, rather than muddy.
Discrete Transistor Mixer
The 5 input, DC coupled mixer is based on the discrete transistor CP3 modular that dates back to the early 1970’s. The module uses a discrete transistor instead of integrated circuits for the mixer core. As the mixer is DC coupled, it can be used to mix both control voltages and audio signals simultaneously. The outputs of the ring modulator and sub bass generators are normalised and are routed through the mixer by default. When a cable is patched into one of the mixer inputs however, the normalising is defeated.
Distortion
The mixer section of the module features a 5th input that can be used to distort signals. It is considerably hotter that the other inputs and provide more amplification to signal on channels 5. When turning the knob to a high level, it overdrives naturally allowing you to create harsh, aggressive sounds.
