Headphones come in various forms to suit different applications. Closed back headphones are well suited for isolated listening and recording, they prevent sound from leaking and being picked up by a microphone or recording device, as well as preventing outside noise reaching the wearer. Open back headphones do not provide as much sound isolation but they offer the high fidelity and sonic clarity needed for critical listening in a studio environment.
